Grodkällan på Slengmyren is a very special sight in the north of Sweden. It’s a bright blue spring in the surrounded by mires. To get there you have to leave the main road and walk a short distance, but I guarantee you will have absolutely love this. In the past years, I returned here several times on my way further up north and each time was different and special in their own way. Read more about your visit to Grodkällan på Slengmyren in this article, in my opinion the most beautiful lake in Sweden!

Hej hej! My name is Antonette and in 2023 I moved from The Netherlands to Sweden. On my website, you will only find firsthand information, written by a local. Enjoy!

Grodkällan på Slengmyren or the “frog cave in the mire” is a natural spring in Swedish nature. The Sámi name is Tsuobbuojája. The bright blue lake is located a 600-meter walk from the parking lot near Lomträsk in Swedish Lapland, in the province of Norbottens län.

Grodkällan got its Swedish name as a translation of the older Sámi name Tsuobbuojája, which literally means frog spring. It’s believed that the name comes from frogs that hibernated here in the spring and that the nomadic Sámi saw when they stopped at the spring on the road between Lomträsk and Arvidsjaur.

The source is a cold water spring and about 15 meters in diameter and about 3 meters deep.

How do you get to the most beautiful lake in Sweden?

From Arvidsjaur take the E45 north (Jokkmokk, Kiruna) and follow it to Auktsjaur. Here you turn right towards Lomträsk, the road is unpaved but in good condition. After 4 kilometers there is a turn to the left, towards Grodkällan. The road is now getting considerably worse, so drive carefully. After about 3 kilometers you will find a parking lot on your right. You can park here and continue your way to the most beautiful lake in Sweden.

The walk to Grodkällan

The walk to Grodkällan is not difficult and about 600 meters one way. The first part goes through the forest, sometimes on a forest path, sometimes on wooden boards to keep your feet dry and nature protected. Not long after leaving the parking lot you arrive in the mire, where you continue walking over board walks to Grodkällan. When it rains it is wise to walk carefully as the planks can be slippery.

There is a shelter and a dry toilet at the source. Platforms have been added around the source so that you can view the bubbling water from above. It is not permitted to enter the water and/or to obtain drinking water from the source.

Wild camping is permitted in accordance with the Right of Public Access, take waste with you and leave nothing but footprints.

Also good to know about your visit to Grodkällan

For your visit to one of the most beautiful lakes in Sweden, it is useful to allow an hour to an hour and a half from the parking lot. This of course depends a bit on your walking pace and how long you stay there. There is not much to see except the lake, outside the paved path you quickly walk into the swamp so you can really go anywhere else from here.

The shelter is a popular place for picnics. You can also light a fire, but do so responsibly. Only use dead wood and do not destroy healthy trees by sawing or breaking branches.

Furthermore, the color of the lake also depends on how much sun there is. I visited Grodkällan four and each time I had quite sunny weather which made the water seem even bluer. But even if it is a rainy day, it can suddenly look very different.

Arvidsjaur offers various accommodation options, ranging from simple to somewhat more luxurious. There are two large hotels in Arvidsjaur: Hotell Laponia and the Lapland Lodge. Both are located in the village.

I stayed at the Lumi Guest House, a small-scale accommodation located a five-minute walk from the center of Arvidsjaur.

If you are traveling by camper, you can stay at Camp Gielas, a large campsite in Arvidsjaur. Wild camping is also possible in the area; I like to use the Park4Night app to find good wild camping spots.

Conclusion

So I have been to Grodkällan four times now. Although there are more tourists today than a few years ago, Swedish Lapland is in many ways still undiscovered by mass tourism. Moreover, many Swedes don’t even know Grodkällan. I was there alone most times and only saw three people the next morning after my overnight stay in my tent. It’s definitely worth it when you drive on the E45 from Arvidsjaur to Jokkmokk.
