Sweden for beginners
Have you planned to go on holiday to Sweden for the first time? Good choice, because there is a good chance that you will become as crazy about this country as I am.
I was once a beginner myself. In 2015 to be precise. Since then I have traveled to Sweden every year and since 2023 I have been living in Swedish Lapland. In my e-book you will find everything you want to know about your first time to Sweden, written by a local (me!).
Between 2001 and 2017 I worked for various travel organizations. Providing concrete, practical tips is my profession and is based on years of experience.
In the e-book you will also find a nice mix of my own experiences and things I would have liked to know when I first traveled to Sweden.

Favorite places in Sweden

The Wilderness Route
The Vildmarksvägen wilderness route is my favorite road to drive in Sweden. From the Stekenjokk plateau, you have stunning views over Jämtland and Swedish Lapland, and it’s a great place for hiking.

Skåne
The varied nature of Skåne is truly remarkable. One moment you’re standing in a deep gorge in Söderåsen National Park, the next day you feel like you’re in the Caribbean at the white beaches of Stenshuvud.

Grodkällan
Sweden’s most beautiful lake is Grodkällan på Slengmyren, a bright blue spring in Swedish Lapland. You can reach it via a short walk, about a 20-minute drive from Arvidsjaur.

Städjan-Nipfjället
A beautiful nature reserve in northern Dalarna is Stadjan-Nipfjället. You can drive there via the “troll road” and enjoy stunning hikes above the tree line.

Swedish Lapland
Swedish Lapland has stolen my heart, and since the summer of 2023 I’ve been living there. Anyone who chooses to travel through Lapland will be amazed again and again—it’s truly something you have to experience!

Ystad
One of the nicest towns in Sweden is Ystad. It’s not very big, so it’s easy to explore in an afternoon, and it’s known for Inspector Wallander and its beautiful beaches.

Summer in Sweden
Summer has started and that means plenty of daylight, lots of fun, swimming and festivals. But also: mosquitoes and sleepless nights. I collected my best tips to make the most of summer in Sweden!

What is a fika?
When you go on holiday in Sweden you will encounter the term ‘fika’ everywhere. A fika is often incorrectly seen as a pastry with coffee or something else tasty. Although this may be part of the fika, a fika is much more than a cake. What exactly is it? You can read that here!

Not sure where to start planning your Sweden trip? Then start reading about the most beautiful places in Sweden! I’m sure you’ll find the necessary dose of inspiration here and that this article will provide a great basis for planning your Sweden holiday.

Arrange your accommodation!
Sweden is a popular destination to visit. Arranging everything in advance gives you a lot of peace of mind and certainty that there is actually room for you.

Travel guide with all the sights of Sweden
In the summer before my emigration, I wrote the Sweden Travel Guide for Uitgeverij Elmar, a practical and cultural travel guide with all the sights. Use it when planning your trip or put it in your backpack or glove compartment on the go.

Book your crossing
Going to Sweden by boat? Highly recommended! I regularly travel from Sweden to Germany or Denmark by ferry, operated by Stena Line and Finnlines, among others.

Packing list Sweden
Although I always say ‘they also have shops there, so you can buy something there if you forget something’, I am often asked what to take with you in your backpack or suitcase when you go on holiday to Sweden. Sweden is western and therefore you do not need to bring many special things with you. Still, I thought it would be useful to collect my tips and tricks in this article with your packing list for Sweden. Enjoy reading!

Free camping in Sweden
Sweden is the destination in Europe where it is still allowed to camp freely, of course within the applicable rules of the Allemansrecht. Because I think it is important that the generation after us can also enjoy this special right, I have listed all the rules for you.
